A Challenge

Guess where we went this weekend?

If the livestock doesn’t give it away, the giant “Fried Dough” sign should… we took Charlie up to the country fair this weekend. He got a kick out of all the animals – he loves animals right now.  We saw baby pigs and GIANT hogs (see above), sheep, alpacas, cows, bulls, and my favorite, the goats. The goat in the photo above kept popping his head up above the fence to check out his fans – so cute! Charlie ran around like a crazy baby, sticking his fingers through the slats of every fence, making my heart beat way too fast. I was sure one of these animals was going to decide his fingers looked like a little sausage and charge over for a taste. Luckily we escaped with all of his fingers in tact. County Fair 009

We had a tough time with Charlie at the fair. He was so excited and just wanted to run from animal to animal, from place to place. There were SO many people, though, and so much stuff I didn’t want to touch. The highlight of him touching things I didn’t want him to was when he tripped and landed with his hand in the remains of a cow patty. Thank goodness for baby wipes; we cleaned him up quickly, before he had a chance to wipe his hand off on his clothes, thank goodness. GROSS.

Charlie is a challenge right now. He is so stubborn and energetic and active. He really doesn’t want to be told no, and his instinct is to throw whatever he’s holding when we tell him he can’t have it.  He did so tonight, and broke a little plate he was holding.  He ended up in time out, and it was about his 17th time out of the day. He also tends to strike when he’s told no. He wears me out, and while I hate seeing his little face crumple when he’s upset, I really don’t want to send him off into the world acting like a beast. We’re trying hard to make him understand we’re boss.  So far, he believes us about 25% of the time.

Luckily for him, he’s awfully cute, and he made us fall in love with him a long time ago, so as bad as he gets, we still think he’s the best thing in our life!

Boy - those timeouts and throwing things when mad sure do make him sound right on track developmentally. Aren't you glad?!

Seriously, we had to purchase "Hands are Not for Hitting" and "Tails are Not for Pulling" for Jacob this summer when he got into the throwing/hitting when upset phase. He loves both books and hitting has decreased (the cats don't let him get close enough yet for tail-pulling). The book also includes a section just for parents on helping your youngster express anger appropriately and Jacob is getting much better.

We still have timeouts but now just use them to calm down before we remind him of the tules.
