one month down

Charlie will be 4 weeks old tomorrow! It's hard to believe it was just a month ago that he was born; it seems like he's been part of our lives for a very long time.

We've had a busy weekend with visits from family - my mom and dad arrived on Thursday, and George's brother Tom and our nephew Ben came on Friday. It was great to have family here to see Charlie, not to mention all the help they provided around the house. Thanks for the house cleaning, the lawn mowing, the weed pulling, and the grocery shopping! We really appreciate all the help and the company.

Charlie has gained a little more weight over the past few days; as of today, he's 1070 grams, or just under 2 pounds 6 ounces. His head circumference hasn't grown any, which is good news, and his PDA has gotten better. It was originally large, and is now classified as small to moderate.

He is still having breathing issues, though - they have been trying to get him back down to requiring just 21% oxygen, but haven't been able to get there yet. They're suggesting we let him rest over the next few days and not overstimulate him, so we probably won't be holding him or having visitors for the next week or so to see how he progresses.

A couple of days ago, Dad was able to do kangaroo care with Charlie (see photos above). We also got a photo when one of his nurses, Anjeanine, was weighing him - it provides a good perspective on his size.

Thanks for all the comments on the blog - it's so nice to hear from old friends and new.

A month! That is simply amazing. I am sure that the kangaroo care was one of your most amazing moments in life, George.

Thanks for saying that he needs quiet and no visitors. People can easily feel guilty for not coming, and this lets everyone feel more at ease.

You still have the key, a bed, and absolute solitude if you want it.

Much love,
Claire and Tom

Happy One Month, Charlie, George and Marie! What a wonderful milestone! This is cause for celebration. Amid everything you have going on, I hope you are finding time for celebrating, even if it's just a low-key celebration in your own head. I'm so happy for this "good news" update!

We are anxious to meet Charlie, but are happy to wait until he is ready.

Love,
Steph

Our prayers and love go out to you and baby Charlie every single day! We are so proud of your strength and your tiny miracle!

We know it seems a long way off, but the day WILL come for Charlie to come home, and his stay at the hospital will be a blip on the radar screen of what is sure to be a life filled with family milestones!

Please know you are always in our thoughts and prayers!

Wow, a month! Isn't it incredible how once you have a child, it seems that they have always been in your life. Your whole world immediately rotates around him, huh? We are glad to hear the good news. We are keeping our prayers up.
