Last night Charlie gained 90 grams, meaning he weighed in at 2 pounds, 10 ounces. While on the surface that might sound like good news, it's actually too much for him to have gained in a single night. He had some swelling indicating he was retaining water (visible in his feet, which looked like little pig feet this morning) so they gave him a diuretic to help him expel the excess fluid. It was doing its trick throughout the day, so we expect that he will have lost a little of the weight tomorrow.
He's still having some issues with his breathing, requiring more oxygen than they would like. His breathing appears to be a work in progress; hopefully it will improve naturally as he gets stronger. They continue to check him for infection now and then to make sure that isn't the cause of his increased oxygen requirement, but he continues to remain infection-free, thank goodness.
In better news, his blood pressure has been improving over the last couple of days, and he hasn't required the bp medication much at all. The less medication he requires, the better!
We continue to be so impressed with and touched by the nurses that take care of Charlie day and night. They treat him like a person, not a patient, calling him by name, talking to him and apologizing to him when they have to do things (like suction his nose and mouth) that make him cry. They update us on Charlie's daily regimens and answer our countless questions, even when those questions come in the form of middle of the night phone calls. We really appreciate all they do for us and for Charlie.

Your comment about the nurses reminded me that I forgot to tell or email you earlier that my friend Louisa knows someone who used to be a NICU nurse at GW. She (Louisa/the friend) said that they have a "really good" NICU there. I'm so glad that Charlie is in such good hands, and he'll be in even better hands when he comes home!
Glad to hear that all is continuing to plug along, and hope to see you all soon!

Good Morning Griffins.I think it's so wonderful that y'all have such great nurses. The same was the case when my grandmother was so sick this past year. It's amazing how unwaveringly kind and patient they can be, despite all the stress. Happy 1-month birthday to Charlie!! It sounds like he's making great strides!!
Hi Charlie,
Happy Birthday to you!
We met about a month ago. I cannot wait to see you again. Our whole family is praying for you and thinking about you and Mom and Dad all the time.
Keep on growing!!!!
Love and lots of kisses,

Happy Birthday, wee Charlie!!

Dear Marie and George,
My name is Donna Damalas. Friend of Patti and Tom. My son Luke was born 13 1/2 weeks premature and doing well. Wow 3 lbs that's truly a victory. Keep it coming. Charlie is in good hands, but don't hesitate to question the staff about any aspect of his care. I really appreciated the openness of the doctors at Bryn Mawr NICU. Although I've not met you my husband and I pray for you a lot. It's powerful. God Bless, Donna and Nick Damalas.
