Today Charlie turned three! Usually I take his birthday off work, but this year I decided to wait and take tomorrow off instead, since we already had a parent-teacher conference scheduled for the afternoon, and I figured I could take cupcakes into his class for him. Unfortunately, our plans have changed – at some point in the day, he got a fever, and before his nap, ended up getting sick to his stomach. Tonight, he clearly wasn’t feeling like himself. Even after a late nap, he didn’t want to open presents and even turned down a b’day cupcake, and then asked to brush his teeth and get in bed. He never fusses when we put him to bed, but he very rarely asks to go to bed. Poor little guy. Oh well – hopefully he’ll feel better tomorrow and will actually show interest in opening some presents!
It was weird to be at work today – I couldn’t help but think about that morning three years ago when I went into work feeling a little under the weather, like maybe I had eaten something that disagreed with me. What a terrifying surprise it was when he arrived a few hours later, tiny and fragile and perfect. He’s continued to surprise us ever since – and make us so happy.
What a long way you’ve come, sweet boy! I love you so very much.
