Growing, talking, spilling, bleeding, falling, learning, and making us proud

I took Charlie for his three year physical yesterday. He is in the 43rd percentile for weight, and the 75th percentile for height. We actually thought he might be a higher percentile in height because everyone that meets him comments on how tall he is for 3, but maybe it’s just because he’s so skinny!

I told the nurse practitioner we saw that he was a former 25 weeker and that we see developmental specialists, and that he’s getting speech therapy and PT through his school now. By that point, Charlie had done plenty of his own talking, and she said she was impressed by his vocabulary (he told her about his orthotics) and had picked up several sentences. I know I continue to bring this up, but it’s such an amazing thing to me that three months ago, he was still barely speaking, and now he’s speaking in sentences!  She said clearly he needs some help with his annunciation, but that she thought his speech and understanding were great. Pretty cool.

Pamela had car issues yesterday, so after the doctor’s office, I worked from home with Charlie. Holy cow, he’s busy now. I don’t notice it until I’m trying very hard to do something else!  In the span of time before he went down for his nap, he spilled two cups of milk and then ripped his band-aid from the doctor’s office off and bled all over his toys. He also has figured out how to push the power button on my computer, so when he thinks he’s not getting the attention he deserves, he just hits the button. It’s the worst on my personal laptop, because it puts the thing to sleep and I can’t figure out how to wake it up.  Luckily he asked to go to down for a nap (clearly mommy is not as much fun as Pamela) and then slept for 4 hours straight!  His cough had kept him from sleeping the night before, so he was making up for lost time.  It was a great opportunity for me to get some work done. After he got up, he was just as busy/wild, and while I was fixing his dinner, he managed to kick himself over backwards in one of our tall kitchen chairs, which came crashing down into the cabinet behind it and then to the floor. Luckily Charlie wasn’t hurt (just very shocked/frightened), but it seems to have cured him at least temporarily from pushing his chair off the ground.

He’s talking SO much now, and says such funny things. We’re working on making him ask for things in sentences, instead of just saying ‘more snack’ or whatever. So now when he wants something, he says “I WANT COOKIE PLEASE”. It’s so funny because I guess it’s sort of polite, but he says it so forcefully it sounds like a demand. And it usually gets him what he wants. He’s repeating everything, and has very specific desires. We let him listen to a CD when he goes to bed, and the other night, he started asking for “Five Ducks”, one of the songs on his Raffi CD. So we had to put that on repeat play for a while. The next night at bedtime he requested “Bee-als” (Beatles), which includes one of his favorite songs, “Letter B” (Let It Be). And tonight he wanted “Science” (his They Might Be Giants science songs CD).

Tonight he was just as nutty as yesterday. Charlie is clearly thinking a lot about using the potty, because he pulled down his pants and started saying “potty”. I got excited by the thought that he might actually be ready to ditch the diaper, but after he waddled into the bathroom, he asked to wash his hands and flush the (empty) toilet, and then proceeded to waddle around for quite a while after with his pants around his ankles, refusing to pull them back up. He is stubborn!

On Tuesday, the weather was tolerable so we went to the park after work. For the first time, he climbed (okay, with a LOT of help) the mini-climbing wall and then went running across the little chain/wood bridge thing on the playground equipment.  A week or two ago, he was still walking tentatively across while holding onto the bars.

It’s really exciting to see how quickly his little mind is taking things in these days, and how his confidence continues to grow. He’s got such a sense of self, and a real determination about what he wants to do.

SUPER CHARLIE!

Thanks to all who have donated to our March for Babies team, Charlie’s Champions!  In last week’s statistics, I was #8 out of the ten top fundraisers for the DC walk!  I’m proud to raise money for a cause that is very near and dear to our hearts.

We’d love it if you joined us on walk day! http://www.marchforbabies.org/melamb
