Last night when I was getting Charlie ready for bed, he was pointing at the photos above his changing table. His normal routine is to go through and point at them, and I say, "mommy, daddy, baby Charlie, nurses" as he points to each photo. Lately he's started waving bye-bye to the nurses photo, which is funny since it's a photo from the day we left the hospital. I must have said "bye-bye hospital" or something like that at some point, and so he waves. But last night, for the first time, he pointed at my picture and said mama! He's been babbling a ton lately, and mama has been one of the sounds we've been hearing a lot, but this time he used it appropriately! Hooray!
Today I went to his school for his goals appointment, the last meeting with them before orientation in the fall. It was good - they have lots of goals set out for him, many of which he may meet before he even starts school, but that's not a problem since they're willing to readjust at any time. The teacher said that she was having a really hard time coming up with age-appropriate gross motor skills goals, though, because he's doing the things on her 2 year old list already! He's got some clear milestones to hit in the fine motor arena, but considering he's now walking down both small flights of our stairs without holding onto us, and he's not just walking but running now, the gross motor is less of a concern. He's still pretty uncoordinated, but she said lots of kids are at his age. It was really nice to hear that he's catching up on the gross motor front, because we keep hearing that the speech will kick in once he stops focusing so much on motor skills. And considering how much noise he's been making over the last 2 weeks, I hope he's onto the communication phase!
I have to admit, I got choked up when I was walking out of the school today. It's amazing to think that this time two years ago, he was still a couple of weeks from coming home, and we were focused on getting him to eat and breathe and regulate his body temperature. And now we're talking about school orientation and parent-teacher conferences! How did we get here???

That is so true about only one kind of skill developing at a time! I hear that a lot too, and I can see it in my own kids. Norah gets super clumsy when she is working on a developmental spurt. And if Charlie is making such huge leaps and bounds physically, it makes sense he's not focusing on the speech part.
But there is no joy like hearing "Mama" for the first time...yeay Charlie!!!
