I think he's having a hard time not being able to talk. I know he understands a lot, and he's probably a little frustrated. Our physical therapist also said micro-preemies like Charlie often have pretty significant sensory processing issues, and can spiral out of control quickly and have trouble calming themselves. On top of all of that, he hasn't been sleeping well the past few days, and obviously that impacts his behavior. I think we really need a weekend with him to get things back in order. I'm so tired between getting up several times a night to settle him and a busy week at work that I am starting to feel like a moody teenager too! Wish us luck.

WOW, this parenting thing is getting HARD
Charlie seems to be taking it upon himself to teach me how little I know about parenting, even after almost two years. He's suddenly decided to transform from the sweet, cuddly, loving boy he's always been to a testy, irritable little guy. His moods fluctuate faster than a teenage girl's, and are just as unpredictable. He throws his toys instead of playing with them, and I don't know if that is just him being a boy or him being a bad boy. Tonight we were playing with him and thought he was having a great time, and then next thing I knew, he was yelling and crying. I literally have NO idea what made him mad. His tendency to hit when he's mad or even excited seems to be increasing, and he also thinks it's fun to take handfuls of my hair in each hand and yank them back and forth. The poor kid is going to be spending a lot of time by himself if he can't get his temper in check!

I know I'm biased, but I would agree that it sounds like he's getting frustrated that he doesn't have words. (Not that sensory processing isn't also a part of it - especially if sleep is getting harder, which is often a sign of an un-centered body.) Do you guys have any pictures that he can use to express himself until his words come? I have access to software to make that stuff for you if you want.
Thanks Allison! We actually have been working with the speech therapist on photos to help Charlie tell us what he wants. We have a bunch in magnet frames on the fridge, and now are onto making little ones for this talk-box thing she is loaning us. So far he shows no interest in it other than pushing the same button 1000 times but i'm hoping he'll figure it out soon.
