troublemaker

Charlie is wild these days! It seems like I barely get things picked up before he's spread them all over again. He crawls so quickly:

and gets into lots of trouble. Nothing paper stays in one piece for very long. He also thinks he should be able to crawl around, under, or over everything. Tonight he was trying to wedge himself between the chair and the wall, and the fact that he was knocking his head against the wall was barely deterring him. He also likes to crawl under the coffee table, even though he can't help but bump his head on it.

He's still really happy, as you can see - except when he's frustrated because he can't fit between the chair and the wall. He only has 4 teeth at the moment, but another one is about to break through. Nana was asking for a photo showing his teeth - Nana, I hope you like this one!

Here he is practicing his adolescent, don't bother me look. I'm sure I'll see it lots over the years.

Charlie has rediscovered his play mats recently - he loved them when he was really little, but had given them a break for the last few months. All of a sudden, his interest is renewed. He's a little more physical with them these days, as you can see:

He loves the music they play; this one has a setting that allows it to play music whenever its shaken, so now as soon as it is quiet, he races up to it and knocks it around so it'll play again.

Here we are this weekend, relaxing in the den after a fun day at the art fair in Alexandria.
He found it curious that his daddy had stolen his chair, but was momentarily enthralled by the video game.

Charlie still doesn't say any words yet. He understands plenty, especially "no", and "more" when in reference to food. He also knows "kisses" (he leans in for a smooch), "gimme 5", and his name. But he doesn't say anything that resembles a word other than "hey", which he says often and probably not with meaning; I think it's just a sound he likes. Charlie will have his first appointment next week with a speech therapist, who is generously offering to come to our house (love the Infant and Toddler Connection programs for their house calls!) at 6 p.m. so that I can meet with her but not have to leave work early. I'm very interested to hear what she has to say; I'm not overly concerned that he's not talking yet, considering he's only 14 months "adjusted" and lots of kids don't talk by then. But since we are offered speech therapy, we might as well take advantage of it. Plus, it's hard to figure out what else to do to help him; we read lots of books and repeat words and sounds a lot, but I'm sure there are other things we could be working on with him. So it'll be good to get her opinion. He also has a PT appointment and his 18 month check-up next week - I can't wait to see how much he weighs these days. By the way my back has been aching lately, I am betting he's gotten BIG!

all that wild movement reminds me of when we stayed at your house and alice insisted on walking up and down your stairs over and over again, giving me nervous breakdown in the process. aaaah so relaxing. :)

He's still not walking on his own, but I anticipate we'll be doing the stairs dance like we did that weekend with Alice very soon! She was loving those stairs - hardwood + tile landing = SCARY! Why are they always so attracted to the things they're not supposed to be?
